COMMENTARIES ON TODAY’S FIRST READING: Jer 33:14-16.

The promised Righteous King will establish a Kingdom of Righteousness: Jer 33:15; Isa 9:7, 16:5; Jer 23:5. Jesus is that Righteous One (compare Mt 12:18-21 with Isa 42:1-2. See also Isa 53:11). Whose teaching is concerned with righteousness [justice]: Mt 5:17-48. He is a righteous judge (Acts 17:31; Rev 19:11). Only the righteous will receive a favorable judgement (2 Tim 4:8; Mt 12:36-37; 25:34).

Catechism Links (some differ from the links given above): 156214; 215; 397; 1063; 2465-2470.The Catechism makes no direct reference to Jer 33:14-16, however, since the text speaks of God fulfilling his covenant promises to David, I think the above  passages on God’s truthfulness and fidelity to his covenant and promises (and what that means for us) might be helpful.

COMMENTARIES ON THE RESPONSORIAL: Psalm 25:4-5, 8-9, 10, 14.

“To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul!” The Hebrew word translated as “soul” (nephesh) has here the sense of “life.” In the context of the 1st Sunday of Advent it is eternal life. The righteous Christ came (1st reading) to both empower and teach us how to live in a manner worthy of eternal life so that we might be “blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus (2nd reading), and stand upright, with heads raised high, longing for his coming (Gospel reading).
